How to read an ADI part number safely

Copy the complete model exactly, find its official Analog Devices product page, and match the string character for character in the current datasheet Ordering Guide. Confirm the electrical variant, temperature or quality grade, package option, environmental status and shipping format. Do not apply one memorized suffix table across traditional ADI, legacy Maxim, legacy Linear Technology and Hittite products.

Product number: identifies the general device or family used for searching and early design work.

Product model: identifies an orderable electrical, grade, package and packing configuration.

Package mark: may be abbreviated and mixed with lot, date or revision fields.

Controlling evidence: the exact Ordering Guide row plus package, material and lifecycle records.

AD8607 is not the same purchasing instruction as AD8607ARZ-REEL7

Analog Devices distinguishes a generic product part number from a specific product model number. The family page may group several packages and packing options under AD8607, while AD8607ARZ-REEL7 identifies a specific orderable model. ADI’s product lifecycle guidance also warns that the generic product number represents a range of models.

Punctuation is data. A dash number may change electrical behavior, while another dash string may select a reel. Never delete characters until the exact product documentation proves their role.
02 / A repeatable workflow

Use six evidence steps instead of decoding from memory

  1. Copy the full model unchanged.Preserve capitalization, slashes, dashes, plus signs and hash signs from the BOM, quote or label.
  2. Confirm the base product on analog.com.Check the function, lifecycle indicator and current datasheet revision. Avoid distributor text as the primary definition.
  3. Match the Ordering Guide row.Read the complete model across temperature range, package description, package option and packing quantity.
  4. Separate electrical and logistical variations.Check whether embedded or dash numbers change speed, threshold, channel count or another guaranteed behavior.
  5. Verify the physical and compliance records.Open the package drawing, land-pattern information, material declaration, terminal finish and moisture-sensitivity data.
  6. Record the evidence with the exact model.Store the full manufacturer model as the controlling key and list every approved alternate separately.

This method can feel slower than guessing on the first RFQ. It is faster than correcting a wrong footprint, an unexpected reel, a temperature-grade gap or a functional variant after the material reaches production.

Three real models show why ADI has no universal suffix syntax

Use the buttons to inspect three orderable models from different portfolio histories. Every interpretation below is tied to the cited current datasheet; the tool does not infer unknown models.

AD8607ARZ-REEL7

The AD8603/AD8607/AD8609 Ordering Guide lists this model at −40 °C to +125 °C in an 8-lead SOIC, package option R-8, packed as a reel of 1,000. Its footnote states that Z denotes a RoHS-compliant part for this product.

ARZ + rowMaps this complete model to the temperature range, 8-lead SOIC and R-8 package option.
-REEL7Maps to 1,000 pieces in this Ordering Guide; that quantity is not universal for every REEL7 model.

04 / The highest-risk punctuation

A dash can mean speed, threshold or shipping

ADI’s catalog contains unrelated uses of dash strings. The AD9265 product family has -80, -105 and -125 sampling-rate selections. LTC4368-1 and LTC4368-2 select different reverse-current thresholds. AD8607ARZ-REEL7 identifies a packing option. Deleting everything after the first dash can collapse electrically different products into one database record.

Swipe horizontally to compare documented examples.

Position alone does not reveal meaning
Model patternDocumented effectRisk if stripped
AD9265BCPZ-80 / -105 / -125Selects sampling-rate modelsElectrical speed variant can be lost
LTC4368-1 / LTC4368-2Selects different reverse-current thresholdsProtection behavior can change
AD8607ARZ-REEL7Selects a documented reel optionOrder quantity and manufacturing logistics become undefined

Preserve the original full string as the immutable manufacturer identifier. If an ERP needs searchable components such as base product, electrical variant, grade, package and packing, create them as secondary fields only after the source row has been captured.

05 / Assurance is product-specific

Temperature letters and automotive claims need exact evidence

Legacy LT, LTC and LTM documentation uses grade letters such as C, E, I, J, H and MP, but those meanings belong to that documented portfolio and product. They must not be imposed on traditional ADI or legacy Maxim models. In the LTC4368 ordering table, IMS and HMS share an MSOP package while the I model is specified from −40 °C to +85 °C and the H model from −40 °C to +125 °C.

A hotter grade is not automatically an approved substitute. Guaranteed electrical limits, test coverage, qualification, price, availability and customer approval can differ. Compare the full ordering rows and the actual limits used by the design.

Keep these automotive concepts separate

AEC-Q100 qualification, suitability for automotive applications, a controlled manufacturing flow, PPAP support and an extended temperature grade are related but not synonymous. The LTC4368 datasheet says that listed #W models use controlled manufacturing to support automotive quality and reliability requirements and directs buyers to ADI for the specific reliability reports. Do not turn #W alone into a broader qualification statement.

Buyer decision point

“Same package, wider temperature” is still a change request

If a supplier proposes an H-grade model in place of an I-grade model, record the two full manufacturer models. Engineering must compare limits and behavior; quality must compare qualification and change-control evidence; procurement must confirm price, lifecycle and packing. A suffix that appears to be an upgrade can still require formal approval.

06 / Mechanical evidence

A package abbreviation is not a footprint

Follow the model to a package option

AD8607ARZ-REEL7 maps to R-8, not merely “SOIC.” MAX31865ATP+T maps to a 20-pin TQFN-EP and its package code. Those identifiers lead to pin count, body size, pitch, exposed-pad geometry, height, outline and land-pattern information.

ADI’s Package Index shows that similar family labels span many drawings and legacy conventions. Confirm the exact drawing used by both the approved model and any proposed alternate.

Package verification checklist

  • Package option or package code from the exact Ordering Guide row
  • Pin count, pitch, body dimensions, terminal geometry and maximum height
  • Exposed pad presence, electrical connection and thermal role
  • Recommended land pattern, stencil implications, MSL and reflow constraints
  • Identical pinout and orientation for every proposed alternate
07 / Production logistics

Packing and RoHS indicators follow portfolio-specific conventions

REEL7 describes a reel convention, not one universal quantity

ADI’s legacy packaging guidance associates REEL7 with a 7-inch reel, but quantity varies with package. The AD8607 guide lists 1,000 for AD8607ARZ-REEL7; another package can use a different count. Legacy Linear strings may use #TRPBF or #TRMPBF, while legacy Maxim models often use T for tape and reel.

Tube, tray and reel versions may contain the same silicon yet differ operationally. Reel diameter, quantity, pocket geometry, component orientation, leader/trailer length and distributor break-pack practices affect feeders, kitting and traceability.

A reel code reaches the production floor as feeder setup, orientation and handling requirements—not as decorative punctuation.Photo: Peripitus, Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 3.0. Unmodified; reel shown contains diodes.

Z, + and PBF are clues, not a cross-portfolio compliance test

Traditional ADI Ordering Guides may define Z for a specific RoHS-compliant model. Legacy Maxim documents can use +, and legacy Linear strings often contain PBF. ADI’s general RoHS information also notes that some RoHS-only products do not carry Z. Absence of Z is therefore not proof of noncompliance.

For controlled procurement, verify the exact model in the current material declaration. Record RoHS status, exemptions if any, terminal finish, MSL and declaration date. Compare the record with the manufacturer or authorized-distributor label at receiving.

08 / Receiving identity

The code on the IC may be shorter than the orderable model

Small packages cannot always display the full model. The HMC347ALP3E datasheet, for example, shows the package marking H347A followed by a separate four-digit lot number. Expecting the full orderable string on the component could reject correct material; trusting a similar-looking top code without the marking table could accept the wrong device.

Approved BOM / POContains the complete orderable model and controlled requirements.
Shipping labelConnects the full model to quantity, lot/date and packing traceability.
Package markingUses the official abbreviated product code plus documented lot, date or revision fields.

Never reconstruct grade, environmental or reel suffixes solely from the top mark. Shipping format usually belongs on the purchase and label record, not each component body.

09 / Operational case

One spreadsheet rule can merge three different products

Illustrative composite scenario / Not a YURUNOX customer result

The ERP strips everything after the first dash

A buyer imports supplier quotes with a cleanup rule that turns AD9265BCPZ-80, AD9265BCPZ-105 and AD9265BCPZ-125 into one normalized base record. Stock, price and lifecycle data then appear under the same key. A future planner selects material based on availability, unaware that the removed number selects sampling-rate models.

The immediate correction is to restore the full manufacturer model as the immutable purchasing key, separate each electrical variant, and revalidate BOMs and approved alternatives. The systemic correction is to permit normalized search fields only when they point back to the preserved original string and its evidence.

The consequence is larger than a typo

A lost functional suffix can change circuit performance. A lost package code can create a footprint mismatch. A lost packing suffix can stop automated assembly or change order multiples. A lost grade or compliance indicator can break a quality record. This is why part-number parsing belongs in engineering data governance, not only text cleanup.

Evaluate a proposed substitute in the right order

Start with the two complete models. Compare the functional variant before package because a footprint-perfect alternate with a different threshold or speed can silently change behavior. Then compare absolute limits, recommended conditions, DC and AC specifications, timing, noise, startup and application-specific performance.

Next compare temperature and quality evidence, exact package drawings, pinout, exposed pad, height, MSL, terminal finish and assembly profile. Finally compare lifecycle, authorized availability, packing, date-code rules and change notices. Add the alternate as its own approved record; do not overwrite the original.

What to put in an RFQ

Illustrative RFQ wording
“Please quote the exact manufacturer model shown, including all punctuation and packing characters. State quantity, packing, lifecycle, lead-free/RoHS status, MSL, traceability and date-code information. Proposed alternatives require prior engineering and quality approval; identify every changed character and provide the current Analog Devices Ordering Guide, package and material evidence.”

Receiving checklist

  1. Match the complete label model to the purchase order and approved BOM character for character.
  2. Confirm manufacturer, quantity, packing, reel/tray identifiers and moisture-sensitive handling.
  3. Reconcile the package top mark with the official marking table; separate product code from lot and date fields.
  4. Check package form, pin count, exposed pad and visible condition against the approved drawing and inspection plan.
  5. Preserve label, lot, date code and chain-of-custody records; escalate unexplained relabeling or mixed lots.

ADI states that its authorized distribution network is one route for authentic products and manufacturer support. Source choice does not replace exact model verification at quotation and receiving.

Availability, suitability and substitution must be confirmed for the exact orderable model at the time of purchase.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between an ADI product number and a product model?

The product number identifies the general device or family. The product model identifies an orderable electrical, grade, package, environmental and packing configuration. Use the product number for searching and the complete model from the current Ordering Guide for purchasing and receiving.

What does Z mean in an Analog Devices part number?

Many traditional ADI Ordering Guides define Z as a RoHS-compliant indicator, including the AD8607 example. It is not a universal test for every ADI-owned portfolio, and some RoHS-only products do not carry Z. Verify the exact model in its datasheet and current material declaration.

What does +T mean on a legacy Maxim model?

For MAX31865ATP+T, the datasheet defines + as a lead-free/RoHS-compliant package and T as tape and reel. Check every other Maxim-origin product in its own Ordering Information instead of transferring the rule automatically.

What does #PBF mean on a legacy Linear Technology part?

PBF identifies a lead-free model in legacy Linear ordering conventions and often appears within a longer suffix that can also describe tape-and-reel or special manufacturing flow. Interpret the complete string from the product’s Ordering Information.

Does REEL7 always mean 1,000 pieces?

No. REEL7 denotes a 7-inch reel convention in traditional ADI guidance, while quantity varies with package. AD8607ARZ-REEL7 is listed as 1,000 pieces, but another model can use a different quantity.

Why is the code printed on the IC shorter than the orderable model?

Package area is limited, so the top mark may be an abbreviated product code with separate lot, date or revision fields. Use the official marking table with the shipping label and purchase record; do not infer missing suffixes from the package alone.

Can I remove a reel suffix when checking electrical compatibility?

Only after the exact datasheet proves that it changes packing and nothing electrical. Preserve the original full model in purchasing and traceability records. Automated stripping is unsafe because other dash suffixes can select speed, thresholds or functions.

Are two ADI parts with the same base number interchangeable?

Not automatically. They can differ in electrical variant, temperature guarantee, qualification, package, pinout, finish, packing or lifecycle. Compare and approve the two complete models using current official documentation.
