Analog Devices ADC Ordering Guide

Copy the exact orderable model from the current product table or datasheet Ordering Guide. Preserve every grade, channel, speed, package, compliance and carrier character—including hyphens, # and +.

There is no safe universal decoder for the complete portfolio. Traditional ADI, Linear Technology/LTC and Maxim-origin ADCs retain different naming conventions, and individual families add their own rules.

The direct answer

Treat the full model as controlled technical data

A base name such as AD7685, AD7606, LTC2320-16 or MAX11198 identifies a converter family or core configuration. It may not define guaranteed accuracy, channel count, throughput grade, temperature, package, lead finish or shipping carrier. Approve the exact complete model, then copy it unchanged into the BOM, AVL, RFQ, purchase order and receiving plan.

Do not “clean up” punctuation

AD7175-2BRUZ-RL7, LTC2320IUKG-16#TRPBF and MAX11198ATE+T are controlled strings, not prose. Removing a hyphen, hash or plus sign can change the identifier or create a model that the manufacturer never published.

01 / Identify the family before reading the suffix

Three naming lineages coexist on analog.com

Acquisitions and long product lifecycles preserved established ordering syntax. Common patterns help a reviewer navigate, but only the exact product-family Ordering Guide defines a valid string.

Traditional ADI

AD7685BCPZRL7

B is a family-specific performance grade; CP points to the package option; Z identifies the RoHS-compliant model in this guide; RL7 selects a reel form.

Linear Technology / LTC

LTC2320IUKG-16#TRPBF

I is the industrial temperature grade; UKG is the package field; -16 is the converter configuration; #TRPBF is lead-free tape and reel.

Maxim origin

MAX11198ATE+T

ATE is the family package field; + denotes lead-free/RoHS-compliant supply and T denotes tape and reel in this family.

A hyphen followed by 2 is part of the core name in AD7175-2. A -6 field in AD7606BSTZ-6 identifies the six-channel member. A final -1000 in AD9094BCPZ-1000 identifies the 1 GSPS speed grade. The same punctuation can serve different functions.

02 / Requirements to receiving

Use a seven-step ordering workflow

  1. Define the converter requirement.Architecture, resolution, channels, simultaneous or multiplexed sampling, input range, throughput, latency, reference, interface, power and guaranteed error.
  2. Select the base product.Use the ADI parametric table and open the exact product page; do not begin from a distributor's shortened text.
  3. Open the latest datasheet Ordering Guide. The first-page feature list does not enumerate every orderable grade, package and carrier.
  4. Match functional and environmental fields.Performance grade, channel or speed member, temperature range and package description.
  5. Select compliance and packing.Preserve the published syntax and verify reel or tray quantity on the current model table or quote.
  6. Verify the exact model's evidence.Lifecycle, material declaration, MSL, package drawing, PCN/PDN records and purchase route.
  7. Control the complete string.Release the exact model across BOM, AVL, RFQ, PO, incoming inspection and engineering-change records.

This process blocks two different errors: procurement normalizing the manufacturer string into an invalid format, and engineering selecting a cheaper grade whose resolution looks identical but whose guaranteed converter limits differ.

Interactive planning aid

What does this suffix pattern require you to verify?

Select a lineage and the proposed change. The result is a review path, not a universal decoder or substitute approval.

1. Which naming lineage?
2. What changed in the quote?

Check RL, RL7 or the exact published reel form

Compare the complete models in the same current Ordering Guide. Confirm standard pack quantity, orientation and manufacturing approval.

Do not assume every RL7 reel has the same quantity.

03 / Traditional ADI worked models

The suffix position changes from one ADC family to another

AD7685: performance grade, package, Z and reel size

The 16-bit AD7685 SAR ADC Ordering Guide separates A, B and C performance grades. All listed models are specified from −40°C to +85°C, so the A/B/C letter is primarily a converter-performance grade here, not a temperature code.

Selected models from the AD7685 Rev. D Ordering Guide. Do not use this subset as a complete model list.
ModelGuaranteed performancePackage and packingDecision consequence
AD7685ARMZ±6 LSB maximum INL; 15-bit no-missing-code guarantee10-lead MSOP, RM-10; tube of 50A grade is not identical to B/C merely because the family is called 16 bit.
AD7685BRMZ±3 LSB maximum INL; 16-bit no missing codes10-lead MSOP, RM-10; tube of 50Same outline as ARMZ, tighter published converter limits.
AD7685CRMZRL7±2 LSB maximum INL; 16-bit no missing codes10-lead MSOP; reel of 1,000Grade and carrier both changed.
AD7685BCPZRLB-grade converter10-lead LFCSP_WD, CP-10-9; reel of 5,000Package, footprint and assembly change from RM.
AD7685BCPZRL7Same B-grade converter and CP-10-9 packageReel of 1,500Carrier quantity changes while converter and package remain the same.

Do not automatically buy the tightest grade. Compare the total error budget, calibration, reference, driver, noise, cost and availability. A grade change still needs engineering approval, even when it looks like an upgrade.

AD7175-2: the “-2” belongs to the product name

AD7175-2BRUZ is a 24-bit sigma-delta ADC in a 24-lead TSSOP. The Ordering Guide lists the base model, AD7175-2BRUZ-RL and AD7175-2BRUZ-RL7. Do not delete -2, move RL7 before Z, or rewrite it in AD7685 syntax. ADI's current product page identifies the family as Recommended for New Designs and shows three part models; exact model status still belongs in the purchase review.

AD7606 and AD9094: channel and speed fields can surround the reel field

The AD7606 Rev. G Ordering Guide uses AD7606BSTZ and AD7606BSTZ-RL for eight channels, but AD7606BSTZ-6RL and AD7606BSTZ-4RL for six- and four-channel reel models. Inserting an extra hyphen creates a different string from the official table.

The AD9094 guide lists AD9094BCPZ-1000 and AD9094BCPZRL7-1000. Reel text precedes the final 1 GSPS speed grade. A visually plausible ...-1000RL7 is not the published model.

04 / Legacy Linear Technology and Maxim syntax

Do not translate one lineage into another

LTC2320-16: temperature grade, QFN and #TRPBF

LTC2320IUKG-16#TRPBF identifies an eight-channel, simultaneous-sampling 16-bit SAR ADC in a 52-lead 7 mm × 8 mm QFN, industrial temperature grade and tape-and-reel lead-free packing. The datasheet separates C (0°C to +70°C), I (−40°C to +85°C) and H (−40°C to +125°C) grades.

Incoming-inspection consequence: the LTC2320-16 datasheet says the temperature grade is identified by the shipping-container label. A top mark such as 2320UKG-16 does not by itself distinguish C, I and H. Retain the original label and lot traceability.

#PBF is the non-reel lead-free model in this table; #TRPBF is the tape-and-reel lead-free model. Do not append Z or replace it with RL7.

MAX11198: + and +T are part of the exact model

The MAX11192/MAX11195/MAX11198 Ordering Information defines + as lead-free/RoHS-compliant supply and T as tape and reel. MAX11198ATE+ is the 16-bit base packing model; MAX11198ATE+T is the reel model. The numeric base changes resolution across the family: MAX11192 is 12 bit, MAX11195 is 14 bit and MAX11198 is 16 bit.

MAX11410ATI+ and MAX11410ATI+T provide another current example, but package letters such as ATE and ATI remain family-specific. Never use a memorized package-code dictionary as a footprint authority.

05 / Translate the model into manufacturing data

The package field is only a pointer to the drawing

Side-view diagram of a QFN surface-mount package with bottom contacts

Store the package option, not only CP or UKG

Examples include CP-10-9 for an AD7685 10-lead LFCSP_WD, RM-10 for its MSOP, RU-24 for the AD7175-2 TSSOP and ST-64-2 for the AD7606 LQFP. The LTC2320-16 UKG package has a 52-lead 7 mm × 8 mm QFN plus an exposed ground pad that must be soldered.

Store lead count, body size, height, pitch, exposed-pad geometry, pin-one convention, package-drawing revision and recommended land pattern in the component library. ADI's Package Index and model-level resources provide the authoritative drawing and material links.

Two ADCs can both contain CP in the model while using different lead counts or drawing numbers. A PCB footprint approved from letters alone is not controlled engineering data.

06 / Logistics suffixes affect production

A reel-only change is still a manufacturing decision

RL, RL7, #TRPBF and +T are not interchangeable words

They belong to different published naming systems. Even within traditional ADI products, RL and RL7 quantities differ by family and package. AD7685's LFCSP examples use 5,000 pieces for RL and 1,500 for RL7, while the MSOP RL7 example is 1,000.

Ask the quote to state standard pack quantity, reel diameter, component orientation, leader/trailer, dry-pack state, MSL label, date-code policy and split-reel handling. ADI notes that some eShop products must be purchased in tube, tray or reel multiples.

Control approved packing variants

If both tray and reel are approved, maintain separate BOM alternates or an explicit procurement rule. Deleting the packing field from the manufacturing BOM makes placement planning and incoming reconciliation ambiguous.

07 / Select the converter before the suffix

An ordering code cannot rescue the wrong ADC architecture

Scroll sideways to review the ADC decision fields →

Decision fieldWhat to defineWhy a suffix review is insufficient
ArchitectureSAR, sigma-delta, pipeline or RF-samplingLatency, bandwidth, filtering and drive requirements differ fundamentally.
Static and dynamic accuracyINL, DNL, no missing codes, SNR, SINAD, ENOB, THD, offset, gain and driftNominal resolution does not guarantee usable accuracy.
Channels and timingSimultaneous or multiplexed sampling, throughput per channel, phase and settlingA channel or speed member can affect firmware, clocking and tests.
Analog inputRange, common mode, bandwidth, driver settling, protection and anti-alias filterThe front end can dominate the total error.
Reference and suppliesInternal/external reference, drift, noise, drive, rails, I/O voltage and decouplingA tighter converter grade may not improve a reference-limited design.
Digital interfaceSPI, parallel, LVDS or JESD; data rate, FPGA resources and latencyThe orderable speed grade must fit the complete digital path.

Use typical specifications to predict likely behavior and minimum/maximum specifications to set guarantees. A grade upgrade can improve one ADC limit while leaving reference noise, source impedance, amplifier settling, calibration or thermal drift unchanged.

08 / Apply the controls

Two illustrative buyer scenarios

Scenario A / ERP normalization error / Not a customer result

A system deletes “unnecessary” punctuation

An EMS imports AD7606BSTZ-6RL but its master-data cleanup inserts a hyphen before RL. The new string looks readable, yet it is not the model published in the Rev. G Ordering Guide. A distributor search may still return approximate matches, masking the defect.

The component engineer compares character for character, restores the official string, locks the manufacturer part-number field against normalization and adds a receiving rule that the supplier label must match the controlled model. The practical consequence is avoiding a purchase-order dispute and preventing a six-channel reel line from being confused with another family syntax.

Scenario B / Prototype tube to production reel / Not a customer result

The converter is unchanged, but the production input is not

A prototype BOM uses AD7685BRMZ in tubes. Production requests a reel and proposes AD7685BRMZRL7. Engineering confirms the B grade, RM-10 package and electrical limits remain aligned; manufacturing confirms the reel quantity, pocket orientation, feeder and dry-pack handling; quality adds the new exact model to the AVL.

The change is lower risk than moving from RM to CP, but it is not invisible. MOQ, NCNR commitment, line setup, moisture controls and receiving labels all change. The team records a controlled packing alternate instead of shortening both to “AD7685B.”

09 / Status and substitution

Family status does not approve every historical model

ADI uses six lifecycle designators: Pre-Release, Recommended for New Designs, Production, Not Recommended for New Designs, Last Time Buy and Obsolete. The Production definition says at least one model in the family is in production. It does not prove that every old grade, package or packing form is orderable.

Check the individual part-model table and subscribe to PCN/PDN notifications. Review package, wafer, assembly, test, marking and material changes for form, fit, function, quality and reliability impact. For a new design, compare newer alternatives even when a mature ADC remains in Production.

Use a layered substitution review

  1. Compare complete strings, including punctuation.
  2. Verify both models in the same current datasheet or product page.
  3. List changes in grade, channel count, speed, temperature, package, finish and carrier.
  4. Compare guaranteed limits and conditions, not only headline resolution or sample rate.
  5. Review pinout, land pattern, exposed pad, marking, MSL and assembly.
  6. Review registers, firmware, FPGA interface, calibration, timing and test coverage.
  7. Obtain written engineering and quality approval before changing the controlled BOM.

Buy directly from ADI or a channel listed by ADI when manufacturer traceability and support are required. For independent-market sourcing, define the additional chain-of-custody, authenticity and inspection evidence before accepting stock.

10 / Make the quote auditable

RFQ and incoming-inspection checklist

ComplianceExact-model material declaration, RoHS, MSL, reflow and storage
TraceabilityOriginal label, lot/date code, country information and chain of custody
Commercial controlQuantity, schedule, region, NCNR terms and alternative rules

At receiving, preserve the evidence before breaking the lot

Match the full manufacturer model against the PO and capture original bag, tube, tray and reel labels. Record quantity, lot/date code, country information, MSL, humidity indicator, seal and supplier chain. Compare package type, lead count, pitch, body size, exposed pad, pin-one mark and top marking with the official drawing.

Quarantine mixed grades, normalized strings, unexplained punctuation, relabeled carriers, missing declarations or damaged dry packing. Functional conversion alone does not prove authorized origin or the guaranteed grade.

Common ordering questions

Analog Devices ADC ordering FAQ

What does Z mean in an Analog Devices ADC part number?

In the traditional ADI Ordering Guides cited here, Z identifies the RoHS-compliant part, as in AD7685BRMZ or AD7175-2BRUZ. Treat this as product-specific evidence, not a universal promise for every historical model. Confirm the exact model and its current material declaration.

What is the difference between RL and RL7?

Both commonly identify reel supply in traditional ADI models, but reel quantity and punctuation vary by product and package. In AD7685 LFCSP examples, RL is a 5,000-piece reel and RL7 is a 1,500-piece reel; the MSOP RL7 example is 1,000. Always use the exact Ordering Guide and quote.

What do #PBF and #TRPBF mean on an LTC ADC?

In the LTC2320-16 ordering table, #PBF identifies the lead-free non-reel model and #TRPBF identifies the lead-free tape-and-reel model. The C, I or H temperature grade appears earlier. Do not replace these fields with Z/RL7 or +T.

What does +T mean on a Maxim ADC?

For the MAX11192/MAX11195/MAX11198 family, + denotes lead-free/RoHS-compliant supply and T denotes tape and reel, making MAX11198ATE+T the reel model. Verify each family because package letters and packing availability still differ.

Is AD7175-2 the same as AD7175 with a packing suffix?

No. AD7175-2 is the base product name for this ADC configuration; -2 is not a carrier code. The complete orderable model adds grade, package, compliance and packing fields, such as AD7175-2BRUZ-RL7.

Can I replace AD7685ARMZ with AD7685BRMZ?

Only after engineering approval. Both are RM-10 MSOP models over the same listed temperature range, but the B grade has tighter maximum INL and a 16-bit no-missing-code guarantee; the A grade is listed with a 15-bit guarantee. Validate the grade change and control the new exact model.

Does a reel suffix change ADC electrical performance?

Published tube, tray and reel variants of the same exact grade and package normally share electrical specifications, but the model, quantity, carrier, orientation, handling and traceability change. Verify both models together and confirm no grade, speed, channel, package or finish field also changed.

What should I send for an Analog Devices ADC quote?

Send the complete manufacturer model, quantity, schedule and region, plus converter requirements, package option, grade, carrier, compliance documents, MSL, date-code and traceability requirements, lifecycle rule and alternative-approval policy.
