Is onsemi the Same as ON Semiconductor?

Yes. onsemi is the trade name and customer-facing brand that ON Semiconductor introduced in August 2021; it is not a different chip manufacturer. Use onsemi for current manufacturer display and product searches, but keep the exact legal entity shown on contracts or invoices. Old ON markings can still be legitimate, yet a name or logo match never authenticates a specific lot.

The short answer

Is the onsemi Rebrand Enough to Approve a Component Lot?

The official 2021 announcement establishes that ON Semiconductor introduced the trade name onsemi. It does not establish that every legacy-marked device, current logo, invoice or marketplace listing is genuine. Use the naming relationship to interpret evidence, then approve the exact MPN and lot through normal source, label, condition and product-change controls.

Condition → recommendation → evidence → stop boundary
Observed conditionRecommendationEvidence requiredStop or failure boundary
Current onsemi name in a BOM or product search Use onsemi
Set it as the canonical current manufacturer brand.
Current onsemi product page, datasheet and exact orderable MPN. Stop if normalization changes the MPN, suffix, package, grade or approved-source rule.

Link it to onsemi without rewriting the original record.
Official company history, rebrand notice and controlled document revision. Stop if the product lineage or current ownership cannot be confirmed by exact MPN.
Old ON device mark with a current onsemi box or label Plausible—verify
Use package size, date/lot and trace evidence.
GA24213, package/marking guidance, every packaging level, lot/date reconciliation and source chain. Quarantine if dates, MPNs, label fields, package or physical construction contradict.
ON Semiconductor Corporation or an affiliate appears on an invoice Commercial review
Preserve the named legal entity.
Validated quote, contract, tax/address/bank onboarding and current terms. Stop payment if the entity or bank change cannot be independently validated.
New logo with implausible date, altered surface or mismatched labels Quarantine
Do not let a current logo override contradictory evidence.
Manufacturer-specific marking information, trace documents and risk-based inspection plan. No release until the contradiction is resolved under the buyer's acceptance procedure.
One-sentence rule: brand equivalence answers “who is the manufacturer lineage?”; MPN, lifecycle, PCN, source and lot evidence answer “can this exact material be bought or released?”

Name control

Which Name Should Buyers Use for the Brand, Registrant, and Seller?

Most confusion comes from forcing every name into one database field. The same corporate group can use a current customer-facing brand while a public filing or sales document names a precise legal entity. Those records are related, but they are not interchangeable.

Technical and customer-facing onsemi

The current lowercase trade name and brand introduced in 2021. Use it for new manufacturer display, product searches and current technical references.

Public-company registrant ON Semiconductor Corporation

The exact registrant name in the fiscal-year 2025 Form 10-K filed on February 9, 2026. Do not replace it inside a controlled filing or legal record.

Operating or selling entity Semiconductor Components Industries, LLC

An operating entity identified in current onsemi terms and website notices. The actual seller may vary by location and transaction.

Manufacturer lineage

What Company History Connects onsemi and ON Semiconductor?

The official company history connects the names directly. It also explains why older Motorola and Fairchild lineages can appear in long-lived product documentation—but those acquired lineages may have their own product-specific changes and must not be reduced to one universal logo rule.

1999Motorola standard-products business becomes ON Semiconductor

Motorola spun off the business into an independent semiconductor company. Legacy product documentation can therefore predate the onsemi brand by decades.

September 19, 2016ON Semiconductor completes the Fairchild acquisition

Fairchild product families joined the company portfolio. Confirm product ownership and conversion history by exact MPN rather than assuming every Fairchild marking follows the 2021 ON-logo rule.

August 5, 2021The new trade name “onsemi” is announced

The company introduced the lowercase onsemi name and refreshed brand. This is the key evidence that the two public-facing names belong to the same manufacturer lineage.

August–October 2021Product-marking and packaging transitions are defined

GA24213 addressed old versus new product marks; GA24213A described staged intermediate-box and label conversion beginning in Q4 2021.

Current filing reviewedBrand and legal registrant continue at different naming layers

The fiscal-year 2025 10-K identifies ON Semiconductor Corporation as registrant and states that it and its subsidiaries operate under the onsemi brand.

Physical evidence

Can a Genuine Component Still Carry the Old ON Logo?

onsemi General Announcement GA24213, issued August 10, 2021, states that product packages large enough for the onsemi wordmark may use it, while packages too small to accommodate the wordmark can continue using the ON logo without change. GA24213A and the packaging manual also describe a phased transition in boxes, labels and graphics.

Logo-only rules fail in both directions

  • “Old ON logo means counterfeit” is unsafe: small packages and legitimate legacy inventory may retain it.
  • “New onsemi logo means genuine” is unsafe: a current logo can be copied or applied to repacked material.
  • “Mixed graphics always fail” is too broad: official transition guidance anticipated different packaging and labeling combinations over time.
  • “Any mixed lot is acceptable” is also unsafe: devices, reels, labels and documents must still reconcile to controlled lot groups.

Master-data control

How Should BOM and ERP Records Handle Both Manufacturer Names?

The practical fix is one canonical manufacturer ID plus controlled aliases. A global search-and-replace is not the fix: it can alter legal documents, break historic audit trails and hide product-level differences.

  • Canonical display: onsemi for new manufacturer-facing records.
  • Aliases: ON Semiconductor, ON Semiconductor Corporation and approved legacy variants.
  • Legal-entity field: exact entity from the controlled transaction document.
  • MPN field: preserve punctuation, case, grade, package and packing suffix.
  • Evidence attributes: store observed logo/name, label photo, lot/date and document reference.
  • Merge approval: record who reviewed duplicate rows and which evidence supported the merge.
Do not create “onsemi” and “ON Semiconductor” as form-fit-function alternates. They represent naming eras in one manufacturer lineage. Engineering equivalence still depends on the exact two MPNs, revisions, packages and qualification requirements being compared.

Lot acceptance

How Should Buyers Verify a Mixed-Brand onsemi Shipment?

The rebrand notice defines plausible branding. It does not authenticate a reel. Preserve packaging-level evidence before opening or repacking, then connect the device, carrier, moisture bag, intermediate box and documents to the same exact MPN and lot/date structure.

No universal sample count or logo pass rule exists. Sample size depends on lot structure, suspected failure mode, destructive versus nondestructive methods, program requirements and consequence of escape. Define the method and acceptance boundary before generating results.

onsemi advises purchasing directly or from an authorized distributor and says it cannot guarantee authenticity or quality for products purchased through unauthorized resellers. When an independent channel is necessary, this source boundary should increase—not replace—the buyer's traceability and risk-based inspection controls.

What Should You Do When an onsemi Name or Label Does Not Match?

This tool routes the next action; it does not authenticate a component. The decision logic is visible in the table above and results remain local to this page.

Suggested status Normalize the brand record

Use onsemi as the current manufacturer display and retain ON Semiconductor as a controlled alias. Preserve the exact MPN and source document.

This route addresses naming only. Product revision, lifecycle, source and lot acceptance still require their own evidence.

Illustrative scenario—not a YURUNOX customer case

Old ON device mark inside a current onsemi box

An EMS receives a reel of small-package transistors from an approved supplier. The intermediate box and MPN label use onsemi graphics, but device bodies carry the compact ON logo. The full MPN, package, quantity and lot/date fields reconcile; original packaging and authorized trace cover the exact reel; visual inspection meets the approved criteria.

GA24213 makes the old device mark technically plausible because small packages may continue using the ON logo. The quality team can document that relationship and follow its normal release procedure. If one fact changes—an impossible date, wrong suffix, undisclosed repack, mixed lot or missing trace—the same visual combination remains on hold. The announcement explains appearance; it does not cancel contradictory evidence.

Buyer workflow

How Should a Buyer Move From a Name Mismatch to Release, Hold, or Quarantine?

Classify the record

Identify whether the difference appears in technical master data, a legal/commercial document or physical material evidence.

Protect the exact item identity

Freeze the OCM, full MPN, package, grade, revision/configuration and packing suffix before changing manufacturer names.

Apply the correct naming layer

Use onsemi as the canonical current brand, preserve historical aliases and keep the exact legal entity on transaction records.

Verify the official transition rule

Use the August 2021 announcement, GA24213, GA24213A and the packaging manual to test whether the observed combination is plausible.

Search current product evidence

Check the exact MPN's current product page, datasheet, package/marking information, lifecycle service and relevant PCNs/PDNs.

Reconcile the exact shipment

Link all packaging levels, device marks, quantities, lot/date codes, source records and physical condition.

Release, hold or quarantine

Release plausible, complete evidence under the buyer's procedure; hold missing evidence; quarantine contradictions before production use.

Record the rationale

Store the accepted naming relationship, evidence revision and lot-specific result so future inspectors can repeat the decision without weakening controls.

Evidence handoff

What Evidence Is Needed for an onsemi Identity Review?

  • Exact manufacturer and full orderable MPN, including suffixes.
  • Current datasheet, ordering guide or package/marking revision used.
  • Required quantity, package type and packing format.
  • Application conditions: voltage, current, frequency and temperature where relevant.
  • Required qualification and customer/program acceptance rules.
  • Date codes, lot/trace codes and the required traceability level.
  • Approved alternates and the authority required for any deviation.
  • Photos of device top/bottom and every package/label level.
  • Quote, invoice/packing record, COC and available source documents.
  • The exact mismatch or question that triggered the review.
