Samsung DDR4 Part Number Guide

First decide whether the string identifies a DRAM chip, an assembled module, a PC4 label description, or SPD data. A Samsung K4A… code belongs to a DDR4 component; an M… code belongs to a module. Preserve every suffix character and verify the exact official ordering row before approving a purchase or alternate.

A module label carries several different identities Samsung 16 GiB DDR4 UDIMM with manufacturer label and visible memory packages
This documented Samsung M378A2K43CB1-CTD UDIMM shows the physical relationship between the module label, PCB and DRAM packages. It is a visual example, not the worked M378A2K43EB1-CWE product below. Image: PantheraLeo1359531, CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons.

The quick answer: identify the product level before decoding

A code can be perfectly valid and still answer the wrong question. The component number describes one packaged DRAM device. The module number describes the assembled DIMM or SODIMM. A PC4 line summarizes characteristics in a standardized label format, while SPD reports electronic configuration data to the host. Serial, date and lot markings add traceability but are not orderable part numbers.

Safe rule: classify the string, keep it complete, open the exact Samsung product record or data sheet, and reconcile density, organization, package or module type, rank, ECC, speed, voltage, temperature, lifecycle, label and SPD. Do not build an approval from a shortened marketplace title.
This is not a universal Samsung decoder. Character meanings and available suffixes can change by density, die revision, package, module generation and document. A field proven for K4A4G085WE-BCRC should not be copied blindly to another K4A family.

Key takeaways

  • K4A… identifies a Samsung DDR4 SDRAM component; M… identifies an assembled memory module.
  • Component density is stated in gigabits; module capacity is sold in gigabytes. An 8Gb chip is not an 8GB DIMM.
  • The hyphenated suffix is part of the orderable component identity and can distinguish package, temperature/power option and speed bin in the relevant ordering table.
  • M378…, M471…, M393… and M386… are useful routing clues, not full compatibility decisions.
  • Matching capacity and DDR4-3200 does not prove interchangeability. Module type, rank, device width, ECC/buffering, SPD and platform rules still control.
  • A plausible label or part number does not prove current production, authenticity or storage condition.

Component MPN, module MPN, PC4 label and SPD are related—not interchangeable

Component MPN

K4A4G085WE-BCRC identifies one DDR4 SDRAM package. Use its exact component data sheet and ordering row.

Module MPN

M378A2K43EB1-CWE identifies an assembled UDIMM. Confirm capacity, rank, speed, pins and component composition.

PC4 description

A line such as 16GB 2Rx8 PC4-3200… summarizes module characteristics. It does not replace the Samsung MPN.

SPD record

The onboard EEPROM reports module type, organization, timing support and manufacturer fields. Compare it with the label and BOM.

This separation prevents a common arithmetic failure: reading the density and width of one DRAM package as the capacity and rank structure of a complete module.

Worked component example: K4A4G085WE-BCRC

Samsung's official 4Gb E-die DDR4 data sheet lists K4A4G085WE-BCRC as a 4Gb device organized as 512M × 8 in a 78-ball FBGA package. In that exact ordering table, the suffix identifies the commercial-temperature, normal-power DDR4-2400 option with a 17-17-17 speed bin.

This segmentation is tied to Samsung's 4Gb E-die ordering table. It is evidence for this family, not a promise that every Samsung suffix ending in RC is otherwise equivalent.

A purchasing system should store the full MPN as text. It must not drop the hyphen, truncate the final characters or reconstruct the MPN from descriptive fields.

Density and organization require separate checks

The 4Gb rating means four gigabits, not four gigabytes. For the documented 512M × 8 organization, 512M locations × 8 bits = 4096 Mbits = 4 Gbits, or 0.5 GB of primary capacity per component. Eight x8 devices provide a 64-bit non-ECC data path for one rank, so eight 4Gb components provide 4GB. Additional ranks or ECC check bits require more devices.

Samsung's family tables also distinguish x4, x8 and x16 organizations. The same density does not guarantee the same package, addressing, bank structure, page size, timing detail or PCB routing. Match the complete base number and suffix—not just K4A4G….

Die letters are not consumer performance grades. Samsung publishes distinct B-die, C-die, E-die and other family data sheets. A die change can affect qualification and availability, but the letter alone does not guarantee overclocking behavior or finished-module equivalence.

Use this six-step decoding and approval method

  1. Capture the string exactly.Record capitalization, hyphen and every suffix character. Keep full label photographs, SPD output and supplier paperwork.
  2. Classify the identity level.Separate component MPN, module MPN, PC4 description, SPD part-number field, distributor SKU and serial/date/lot markings.
  3. Open the exact Samsung record.Use the product page, density/die-specific component data sheet, module data sheet or official SPD file. Do not decode from an unrelated generation.
  4. Reconcile electrical and mechanical fields.Confirm density or capacity, x4/x8/x16, rank, ECC/buffering, data rate, voltage, package or pin count and temperature grade.
  5. Check platform and lifecycle evidence.Review system QVL/manual, CPU memory-controller limits, BIOS, population rules, current Samsung status and any applicable PCN/PDN history.
  6. Freeze the approved identity.Quote the complete MPN, prohibit silent substitutions and store the document revisions and traceability requirements used for approval.

How to route Samsung M-series DDR4 module numbers

Samsung does not publish one simple public rule that safely decodes every character in every DDR4 module MPN. Use the visible prefix to locate the likely family, then let the exact product record or module data sheet prove the type, capacity, rank, speed and composition.

M378…

UDIMM route

Common Samsung desktop unbuffered module family. Verify DDR generation, capacity, rank, x8/x16 organization, speed, 1.2V operation, 288 pins and lifecycle on the exact record.

M471…

SODIMM route

Common small-outline notebook or compact-system family. Confirm 260-pin DDR4 form factor, module height, capacity, rank, speed and platform support.

M393…

RDIMM route

Server registered module family. Verify register, ECC organization, x4/x8 width, rank count, component composition, 288 pins and server qualification.

M386…

LRDIMM route

Load-reduced server module family. Data buffers, register generation, SPD programming, rank structure and firmware qualification are configuration-critical.

Form factor is a compatibility field, not a visual preference

A DDR4 SODIMM is physically shorter than a full-size DIMM and uses a different connector format. Even within the correct form factor, capacity, rank, device width, ECC/buffering, timings and platform rules still matter.

A seller's “Samsung DDR4 laptop RAM” title is therefore insufficient. Ask for the complete M471 MPN, label photo, speed/rank description and SPD evidence when qualification risk justifies it.

Do not mix module architectures. UDIMM, ECC UDIMM, RDIMM, LRDIMM and SODIMM are not interchangeable labels for the same product. Similar headline speed or a familiar connector does not override electrical and platform differences.

Three documented cases show what the full record adds

Official Samsung record · not a YURUNOX customer anecdote

M378A2K43EB1-CWE: a 16GB, 2R × 8 DDR4-3200 UDIMM

Samsung's product record identifies this exact module as DDR4, 16GB, 3200 Mbps, 1.2V, 2R × 8, 288 pins and composition (1G × 8) × 16. Each x8 component contributes 8Gb, or 1GB; sixteen components provide 16GB. Eight x8 components form a 64-bit non-ECC rank, so sixteen are consistent with two ranks.

Official Samsung record · lifecycle lesson

M393A1K43DB1-CVF: an 8GB, 1R × 8 DDR4-2933 RDIMM

The Samsung record lists 8GB, 2933 Mbps, 1.2V, 1R × 8, 288 pins and composition (1G × 8) × 9. Nine x8 devices create 72 physical data bits: 64 primary data bits plus eight ECC check bits. The marketed 8GB capacity counts primary data, not an extra gigabyte for the ECC device. Samsung also labels this exact MPN EOL, showing why a historical data sheet is not proof of current production.

Official Samsung SPD file · server-memory lesson

M386AAG40MMB-CVFC0: the label description is not enough

Samsung's SPD file identifies DDR4 LRDIMM, 4R × 4 organization, a 64-bit primary bus with ECC, 1.2V, DDR4-2933 CL21, a thermal sensor, 16Gb DDP components and named register/data-buffer revisions. That detail explains why an RFQ for only “128GB DDR4-2933” is unsafe: buffer generation, rank topology, SPD programming and server qualification can differ even when capacity and speed match.

Rank, ECC, density and speed: the calculations buyers should cross-check

Bits to bytes

4 Gb ÷ 8 = 0.5 GB

A 4Gb component contains half a gigabyte of primary data capacity. Lowercase b and uppercase B are not cosmetic.

Rank width

8 × x8 = 64 bits

Eight x8 devices commonly form one 64-bit non-ECC rank. Two ranks commonly use sixteen, subject to package stacking and exact composition.

DDR data rate

3200 MT/s ÷ 2 = 1600 MHz

DDR transfers data on both clock edges. DDR4-3200 describes the transfer rate, not a 3200MHz physical clock.

ECC capacity is not counted twice

A typical x8 ECC rank uses nine x8 devices: eight for the 64-bit primary data path and one for eight check bits. The extra device protects data; it does not add separately addressable user capacity. A rank is also a logical 64-bit or 72-bit set, not simply “one side” of a module.

CAS latency needs time, not only a CL number

An approximate CAS time is CL divided by the real clock frequency. DDR4-2400 CL17 uses a 1200MHz clock and is about 14.17ns; DDR4-3200 CL22 uses a 1600MHz clock and is about 13.75ns. Real memory latency also includes other timings, controller behavior, refresh, rank activity and workload. Never approve a substitute from CL alone.

A faster bin may downclock, but that is not a compatibility guarantee. Verify module type, capacity, rank, device width, ECC/buffering, supported timings, BIOS, CPU memory-controller limits, population order and the system vendor's qualification rules.

Identifier triage tool: collect the right evidence

This tool does not guess a hidden decoder result. It routes the identifier to the minimum evidence set needed for a quote, substitution review or incoming decision.

Open the exact component ordering table

  • Preserve the full K4A base number and hyphenated suffix.
  • Verify density, x4/x8/x16 organization, die revision, package, temperature/power option and speed bin.
  • Keep component identity separate from any module capacity or rank claim.

The output is an evidence checklist, not a compatibility, lifecycle or authenticity approval.

Turn the decoded identity into an RFQ and receiving control

YURUNOX is an independent electronic-component sourcing partner, not the manufacturer of Samsung memory. A practical Samsung sourcing request should connect the approved manufacturer identity to supplier evidence, platform requirements and receiving criteria.

Illustrative procurement scenario

A quote says only “Samsung 16GB DDR4-3200 UDIMM”

Do not release the order from that description. Ask for the complete M378 MPN, rank and organization, component composition, voltage, 288-pin form factor, label photographs, lifecycle evidence, packaging, quantity, date/lot limits and traceability. Compare the proposed module with the approved system QVL and population rules. This is an illustrative control scenario, not a reported YURUNOX transaction.

Illustrative receiving scenario

The label MPN matches, but SPD reports a different part string

Quarantine the material and preserve the evidence. Re-read SPD with a trusted tool, check the physical label, serial/date/lot data and component population, then compare the official SPD/product record and supplier chain of custody. Do not assume the label or SPD is automatically correct. This example is not a claim about an actual shipment or test result.

RFQ and incoming-inspection checklist

  • Exact identity.Samsung manufacturer name and complete MPN, including the hyphen and every suffix character.
  • Product level.State whether the request is for a DRAM component or assembled UDIMM, ECC UDIMM, RDIMM, LRDIMM or SODIMM.
  • Capacity and organization.Record Gb per component or GB per module, x4/x8/x16, rank count, ECC and component composition.
  • Speed and voltage.Specify data rate, official speed bin/timings, 1.2V requirement and allowed downclock behavior.
  • Mechanics.Confirm FBGA package/ball count for components or pin count, outline, height and keying for modules.
  • Platform approval.Provide system model, CPU, QVL/manual, BIOS level, DIMMs per channel and population rules.
  • Lifecycle and change control.Request current Samsung status, applicable PCN/PDN history and written approval for any alternate.
  • Traceability.Define accepted source, invoice chain, packing, date/lot restrictions, quantity split and warranty.
  • Receiving evidence.Require label and package photos, character-by-character MPN comparison and SPD reconciliation for modules.
  • Exception handling.Quarantine unexplained label, SPD, component, date/lot or packaging differences under the buyer's quality-assurance process.

The platform is part of the specification

CPU memory controllers can reduce supported speed as ranks or DIMMs per channel increase. System vendors may restrict x4/x8 topology, capacity per slot, mixed ranks, ECC, RDIMM/LRDIMM combinations or population order.

A memory module can be genuine and electrically functional yet still be unsupported in the target server or PC. Keep platform approval separate from product identity and supplier authenticity checks.

Frequently asked questions

What does K4A mean in a Samsung memory part number?

In Samsung's cited DDR4 documentation, K4A… identifies a DDR4 SDRAM component family. Use the complete family data sheet and ordering row to confirm density, organization, die revision, package, temperature/power option and speed.

What is the difference between K4A and M-series Samsung numbers?

K4A… refers to one packaged DRAM component. An M… number refers to an assembled memory module. Module capacity, rank and ECC/buffering depend on multiple components and the module architecture.

What does the suffix BCRC mean?

For the cited 4Gb E-die ordering table, -BCRC is the 78-ball FBGA, commercial-temperature/normal-power DDR4-2400 17-17-17 option. Do not apply that explanation blindly to unrelated Samsung families.

Does Samsung B-die always mean the fastest DDR4?

No. A die letter identifies a documented die family or revision, not a universal speed or overclocking guarantee. Check the exact component MPN, official speed bin, module PCB, SPD, controller and validated operating conditions.

Is M378 always a DDR4 UDIMM?

Samsung uses M378… for familiar UDIMM examples, but the prefix alone is not a compatibility guarantee and Samsung has used the family across memory generations. Confirm the exact part's DDR generation, capacity, rank, organization, speed, voltage, pin count and status.

Can DDR4-3200 replace a DDR4-2666 module?

Sometimes a faster module can operate at a lower supported rate, but compatibility also depends on module type, rank, organization, ECC/buffering, capacity, SPD timings, controller limits, BIOS and population rules. Obtain platform and engineering approval.

Does 2R × 8 always mean sixteen memory packages?

For a standard 64-bit non-ECC module built from x8 devices, two ranks commonly use sixteen x8 devices. Stacked-die packages and ECC modules change the physical package count, so verify the official component composition.

Can a valid Samsung part number prove that a module is genuine?

No. A plausible string is only one identity clue. Authenticity requires trustworthy sourcing, traceability, label and package inspection, SPD consistency and risk-based electrical or laboratory checks.
